What's a Chihuahua actually like?

The Chihuahua is the world's smallest dog breed — and one of the oldest, with roots going back over a thousand years to the Toltec and Aztec civilisations of Mexico. Despite weighing less than a bag of sugar, they have the personality of a Doberman packed into a teacup. Bold, loyal, suspicious of strangers, and devoted to one or two people for life.

Adult size: 15–23 cm tall, 1.5–2.7 kg. Lifespan: 14–17 years (the longest-lived breed in the world). Coat: smooth or long — both need only weekly brushing. Energy: medium — short walks plus indoor play is plenty. Trainability: intelligent but stubborn — early consistent training is essential, especially for housetraining (they hate going out in the rain or cold). Watch out for: hypoglycaemia in young pups, dental crowding, patellar luxation, and tracheal collapse (always use a harness, never a collar).
